What’s different between iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max: a detailed comparison

The iPhone 13 / iPhone 13 Pro range hardly looks like a major upgrade. Of course, the newcomer
outperforms its predecessor in almost every way, but for the most part only at the expense of
software "features".

Steel or aluminium? Comparing the design and dimensions of the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and
iPhone 13 Pro Max
The design of the iPhone 13 series is not new – the trend was set by its predecessor, iPhone 12. All
representatives of the 2021 lineup are of the same design, differing essentially in size and camera
module. The smartphones echo the features of last year's model, which, in turn, was inspired by
either the iPhone 4 or the latest iPad Pro. The distinctive feature of this style is the crisp, chopped
edges. The corners of the smartphones are rounded. The differences between the representatives of
the line are in the material of the body. Whereas the iPhone 13 has an aluminium case (the material
used in the aerospace industry), the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have a medical surgical
stainless steel body.

The front panel is almost entirely given over to the screen. A distinctive feature of the last few
generations of iPhones, the bangs-shaped display cutout for the cameras, has been retained. It is the
same in all three models. Also, the front panel of these smartphones is protected with Ceramic Shield
technology. The controls on the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are in the same
places too: the volume and silence switch buttons are on the left edge, as is the SIM slot, while the
power button is on the right edge. The bottom edge is reserved for the speakers and Lightning port.

The rear panel of all these smartphones is made of glass. In the middle is the traditional Apple logo in
the shape of an apple. The camera module, on the other hand, clearly sets the iPhone 13 apart from
the iPhone 13 Pro. This platform itself is placed in the upper left corner. But the iPhone 13 clearly has
a smaller one, and it contains a pair of camera modules located diagonally from each other. The
iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro both have a larger platform and the lenses themselves are more
massive. The pro models got 3 cameras each, they are arranged in a triangle. In addition to the flash,
there is also a LiDAR module eye on the pad, which the iPhone 13 is devoid of. The number of lenses
is the main visual difference between the Pro series and the base model.

If we try to identify the difference between the three smartphones in size, the iPhone Pro Max
(screen diagonal – 6.7 inches) clearly stands out. It is 160.8 mm long, 78.1 mm wide and 7.65 mm
thick. While the senior member of the series weighs a lot – 238 g. But the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13
Pro (screen diagonal of both smartphones – 6.1 inches) have the same geometric dimensions: 146.7 ×
71.5 × 7.65 mm. Except that the "proshka" weighs more – 203 g against 173 g relative to its smaller

It's worth noting that all three smartphones are the same thickness – further proof of Apple's
commitment to a unified design.

The iPhone 13 is available in five colour options, while its larger counterparts have four. The iPhone
13 is offered in the colours Shining Star (white), Dark Night (black), Blue, Pink and PRODUCT RED.

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, on the other hand, are available in quieter colours: silver,
graphite, gold and sky blue.

Conclusion: The top-end iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models differ in body material and
number of cameras. That's where the major design difference lies. The iPhone 13 got its own colour
options, but there are quite a few for the iPhone 13 Pro / iPhone 13 Pro Max as well.

Display of iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max

All three models get a Super Retina XDR OLED display. At the same time, the iPhone 13 and iPhone
13 Pro have the same diagonal screen size, which is 6.1 inches. The iPhone 13 Pro Max, on the other
hand, has a corresponding particle in its name for a reason. It is the largest member of the range,
with a screen measuring 6.7 inches diagonally.

The screen resolution of iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro is the same – it is 2532 × 1170 pixels, a density
of 460 pixels per inch. The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a slightly higher resolution, which is explained by
the screen size – 2778 × 1284 pixels, the density is almost the same as that of its brethren – 458 pixels
per inch. All smartphone displays support HDR, True Tone technology, P3 wide colour gamut and are
haptically responsive. In HDR mode, the brightness of the screen reaches 1200 cd/m2.

But the Pro series has its own distinct differences from the basic model. The most important is the
presence of ProMotion technology (in detail). It allows the display to upscale the refresh rate to
120Hz so that content is displayed as smoothly as possible. And for static images, the frequency can
drop as low as 10Hz, which is clearly good for battery life. The iPhone 13 operates at the standard
60Hz frequency at all times.
